New BC Transit operations facility under construction in Genelle

Work is underway on a new BC Transit operations and maintenance facility in Genelle that will service the West Kootenay transit system.

BC Transit said in a press release that it is retrofitting an existing building at 1175 Lower China Creek Rd. into an operations and maintenance facility where buses will be stored, maintained, cleaned and prepared for daily service.

The project will include upgrades to site safety and security, expanded bus parking, modernized maintenance shop systems and improvements to water and drainage infrastructure.

Additional work includes upgrades to electrical, lighting, ventilation and security systems, new paving and employee amenities such as a lunchroom.

BC Transit said the facility will have capacity for up to 36 buses and is intended to improve operational efficiency while meeting regulatory and safety requirements.

“These improvements ensure the Genelle facility is modern, safe, and fit for transit operations, supporting BC Transit’s commitment to delivering reliable transit services while prioritizing the safety of employees and the public,” BC Transit said.

The upgraded facility is expected to become operational July 1, although BC Transit said some work will continue through the summer, with full completion anticipated in late summer.

The project will cost about $4 million and is being funded by the province and the Regional District of Kootenay Boundary.
