School District 20 to move maintenance operations into former B.C. Transit site

Kootenay Columbia School District 20 plans to move its south-end maintenance operations into the building it owns on Old Waneta Road.

The site is currently leased by B.C. Transit, but that agreement is set to end next month.

The school district’s south-end transportation department is already based at the Waneta Road site, while south-end maintenance operations are located at the Warfield shop, a former two-room schoolhouse next to Webster Elementary School.

Superintendent Katherine Shearer said the aging Warfield facility has served the school district’s needs in the past, but has now become impractical.

“Its age and original design limit our ability to complete necessary upgrades, most notably to the dust collection system,” said Shearer. “These upgrades are essential to meet current operational and safety requirements, and they are not feasible within the existing structure.”

As a result, the district plans to relocate south-end maintenance operations to the Waneta facility.

Shearer said reoccupying the Waneta site will allow the district to upgrade the space into a purpose-built facility that can accommodate required systems, improve working conditions for staff and meet safety and operational requirements.

B.C. Transit is expected to move out of the building on July 1 as it relocates its maintenance and operations hub to Genelle.
