Construction poised to start on downtown Trail transit exchange

Work will finally begin this month on Trail’s new downtown transit exchange.

Municipal services manager Jared Miner told city council this week that a construction kickoff meeting was held last week.

A local company, Simm Excavating & Snow Removal Ltd., has been awarded the contract and is planning to mobilize between Sept. 14 and 21, depending on co-ordination with BC Transit. A traffic management plan has been submitted for review, Miner said.

The project, which is valued at $3.7 million, will see a new exchange built on Cedar Avenue between Spokane Street and Portland Street. Highlights include six concrete bus pads, three covered shelters with seating, bicycle racks, a dedicated driver washroom, brigher lighting, wider sidewalks, and new signage.

According to BC Transit, the project is expected to be completed this winter.

A temporary bus stop will be established along Spokane Street, between Cedar Avenue and Bay Avenue while work is underway.

Council signed off on the location and the design in January, although the vote was not unanimous. Planning on the exchange started several years ago.
