Trail man arrested for cane assault

Police in Trail say a 28-year-old city man is accused of assaulting a 39-year-old man with a cane.

They say the incident happened Sunday afternoon in the 1400 block of Bay Avenue. The victim was believed to have been hit five or six times before he grabbed a nearby pole and struck back. Neither man suffered serious injuries.

Police say the men knew each other and the public was never in danger.

The victim believed to be hit five to six times before grabbing a nearby pole and striking back at the suspect. The two men knew each other and the public was not in danger at anytime. Neither man suffered serious injuries.

The 28-year-old will appear in court on May 25 on a charge of assault with a weapon. He was released on conditions including having no contact with the victim.

“Trail RCMP is responding to incidents involving the downtown vulnerable population,” Sgt. Mike Wicentowich said in a news release. “There continues to be a great need to provide safe shelter and spaces to help prevent incidents.”

Man with knife arrested

Also Sunday afternoon police arrested a 34-year-old Trail man with a knife on Eldorado Street. They say the man had an outstanding warrant for previous offences including possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.

He remains in custody pending a court appearance.

Drug fatality prevented

Police say they were called Sunday evening to a report of an unresponsive woman who locked herself in a washroom in a business in the 800 block of Victoria Street.

An officer forced their way in and discovered the woman needed immediate medical help due to a suspected drug overdose. She was taken to hospital.

“Our officer located the woman in obvious medical distress and quick action prevented possible deadly consequences,” Wicentowich said.

“Trail RCMP believe drug overdoses will continue to be a prominent issue in the downtown. We encourage the public to learn to recognize the signs and symptoms and contact emergency services if required, or learn to provide drug overdose first aid such as administering NARCAN when needed.”

Wandering person registry available

Trail RCMP maintain a wandering persons registry for vulnerable people who may suffer from medical or physical conditions that lead to wandering or other activities that pose a hazard to themselves.

Police say the key objective for this initiative is to improve the safety of vulnerable people. The information collected should reduced the time emergency services need to locate a missing person.

If you believe that you or a loved one would benefit from being added to the registry, you can contact the Traild detachment at 250-364-2566 to speak with Cst. Sherri Karn who is the wandering registry co-ordinator and community liaison.

“Having the person’s details, a photograph and when and where they are likely to wander can save the police valuable time in locating a loved one,” Wicentowich said.
