Castlegar athlete crowned jiu jitsu champion

Castlegar’s Kierra Cates added a major achievement to her jiu-jitsu career on Saturday, June 6, capturing the AVA Gi championship in Vancouver.

Competing for Confluence Jiu Jitsu, Cates secured the title with an ankle-lock submission over the defending champion. The victory carried extra significance, as Cates had previously lost to the same opponent.

Rossland’s Irie Anderson also earned a notable win at the event, defeating a Vancouver gym owner in a featured matchup.

The invite-only competition brought together ranked athletes who had competed in previous AVA (All vs. All) events.

Cates will not have much time to celebrate. She and her Confluence Jiu Jitsu teammates are scheduled to compete at another AVA tournament in Cochrane, Alta., the following weekend. Cates is also expected to defend her newly won title at a future event.
