Planned ignition for Bulldog Mountain wildfire

Residents may see more smoke coming from the Bulldog Mountain wildfire starting Friday, August 31. Weather permitting, planned ignitions will be underway with smoke highly visible from Castlegar, Robson, and Deer Park. Paul Schnurr is the Incident Commander for the Syringa Complex of Wildfires. He explains why this tactic is used. “Using fire, we try to accomplish a number of different things with it, but a lot of times it’s to consume the unburned fuel between a small controlled line and the larger fire so that the two will meet up and the fire has nowhere to go because you know, all the fuel is consumed and now you have a really wide control line.”

An evacuation order, which was put into place by the Regional District of Central Kootenay, remains in effect for Renata and properties north of Deer Creek.
