Kootenay Savings dispute heads to mediation

A mediator will try to break the impasse between Kootenay Savings and its unionized employees.

Dave Schuab will meet with the sides in Trail beginning Oct. 17.

United Steelworkers rep Dean Lott isn’t sure why they’re having such a tough time.

Employees voted this week over 96 per cent in favour of a strike —  it’s the second such vote they’ve held.

The key sticking points are pension protection language and a two-year wage freeze.

United Steelworkers locals 9705 and 1-405 represents 110 employees at branches and offices in Salmo, South Slocan, Kaslo, Trail, Fruitvale, Castlegar, and Kimberley.

The Nakusp, New Denver, Radium, and Invermere branches are not unionized.
