Castlegar founder’s relative remembered

A woman with close ties to Castlegar’s beginnings has died.

Marolyn Mahon passed away Monday at her home in Mercer Island, Wash. at age 90.

Her father-in-law Edward Mahon named Castlegar and had the townsite surveyed in 1897.

Local author Walter Volovsek got to know her well while writing Edward’s biography, The Green Necklace.

Volovsek says Marolyn gave him access to the family’s extensive archives and photo collection.

She is survived by her son, daughter, and three grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her husband Bryan, Edward’s only son, in 2005.
