Slocan mayor Jessica Lunn not seeking re-election

Slocan will have a new mayor this fall.

After almost 12 years in the position, Jessica Lunn has announced that she won’t seek re-election in October. Lunn also served six years as a village councillor before being elected mayor in 2014, for a total of 18 years on council.

“That’s a pretty big chapter of my life,” she said in a Facebook post. “And I have genuinely loved it! I love this community — our character, our people, and the way folks show up when it matters. It has been an incredible privilege to serve a place that means so much to me.

“When I first put my name forward, Slocan was at a turning point. Things that had long defined this community were changing, and we had a choice about how we wanted to meet the moment.”

During Lunn’s time on council, the village acquired the former sawmill lands on the waterfront and has conducted some visioning work about how the site might be redeveloped.

She said the decision not to seek re-election wasn’t easy, but she is “feeling pulled toward somethign different now.”

No one else has yet announced that they will seek the job. Lunn said sometimes people need someone to tap them on the shoulder and ask if they have ever thought about running.

“Consider this my tap on your shoulder,” she said, offering to meet with anyone who is curious about what serving as mayor or on council is like.
