Brandson Park upgrades progressing

Construction on Castlegar’s Brandson Park renewal project is well underway, though city staff are not yet providing a timeline for when it will be finished.

Project manager Anne Simonen told city council on Monday that crews have been busy installing key features throughout the park.

“The engineered wood fiber is being delivered. It’s being loaded into the playground. We got benches and picnic tables loaded all over the site,” she said.

Simonen said plants have also been installed and grading work is underway.

“It was an absolute hive of activity on the site,” she said.

However, she was reluctant to provide further updates, saying the city is still waiting for the delivery of some remaining playground equipment.

“I don’t have a firm date on project timelines yet. We are still waiting on those last bits of equipment that need to be delivered,” she said.

“I’m hoping to be able to give council an update shortly, but I would rather not give one right yet.”

The park is being built on a portion of the former Brandson Park property after part of the site was sold for a condominium development. Council approved the park’s final design in November 2025 following a public engagement process that drew input from more than 200 residents.

The renewed neighbourhood park includes playground equipment for children of various ages, accessible pathways, picnic tables, benches, additional trees and historical interpretive signage.

The project is budgeted at about $382,000 and is funded through the city’s game host agreement reserves.
