Vallican evacuation order and alert lifted

Some Slocan Valley residents can breathe a little easier.

The Regional District of Central Kootenay has rescinded an evacuation order forĀ 3355 Little Slocan South Road in Vallican, as well as an evacuation alert for five other properties on the same road.

They had been under the order and alert after mudslides on May 2 and 3.

ā€œThis has been a stressful time for residents and we understand the impact of an extended evacuation order/alert, said Stephane Coutu, RDCK emergency operations centre deputy director.

“However it is imperative to follow the recommendations of technical experts to ensure the risk is reduced before lifting these orders.

ā€œWe are still in the midst of our freshet season and residents are advised to remain vigilant and to stay up to date on weather and flood warnings.ā€

Ā The risk of snowmelt triggered debris flows in the area is now lower due to the reduction of the snow pack. The Talbott Creek wildfire of 2020 elevated the hazard to all properties along the creek’s fans. The RDCK says there is the potential for future slides that could result in evacuation alerts or orders.
