RDKB Wildfire Update August 19

Evacuation Alerts remain in effect in the Regional District of Kootenay Boundary. The Santa Rosa wildfire, or Horns Mountain wildfire as it’s called in the US, has crossed the border between Christina Lake and Rossland. The BC section of the fire is 188 hectares and 33 addresses remain on evacuation alert in the Santa Rosa and Big Sheep Creek Area.

The RDKB says it’s been a challenge for aircraft to engage this fire due to heavy smoke, however, the smoke also helps keep the fire intensity down. Fortis BC also has technicians in the area to help ensure assets are protected.

The Lynch Creek fire in the Granby River Valley is 161 hectares in size and is classified as being held. The fire is 100 per cent guarded with machine guard and wet lines. Crews continue to mop up and patrol for hotspots.

The Toronto Creek wildfire 12 kilometers north of Grand Forks is 12 hectares in size and 80 per cent contained. It’s 100 per cent guarded and crews are still adding to containment lines. Evacuation alerts remain for 22 addresses on Granby and Volcanic Creek Roads.

The RDKB says smoke is expected to remain in the area as there are fires to the north, west and south.
