Longtime Area H director Walter Popoff won’t seek re-election

After 18 years representing Electoral Area H on the Regional District of Central Kootenay board, Walter Popoff will not seek re-election this fall.

Popoff was first elected to the board in 2008 and has represented the area ever since.

Popoff had previously told Vista Radio he was undecided about seeking re-election and planned to make his decision after the RDCK’s August board meeting.

In an email Friday, Popoff said he had reviewed his family situation and the workload involved in representing Area H and decided he was not in a position to commit another four years to community service.

“It is time for me to retire, concentrate on my health and spend more time with my family,” Popoff said.

His decision means Area H voters will elect a new director in the Oct. 17 local government election.

Popoff is the second incumbent RDCK director to confirm he will not seek another term, following Area E Director Cheryl Graham.

Six other incumbent directors have confirmed they will seek re-election, while the plans of three others remain unclear.

The nomination period opens Sept. 1 and closes Sept. 11.
