Everest Legacy Fund tees up fundraiser for local youth

The Everest Legacy Fund is bringing golfers together Saturday for a fundraising tournament aimed at supporting local youth.

The event at Balfour Golf Course will raise money for the fund, which helps children access counselling and participate in sports.

Mike Ballance, Everest’s stepfather and a member of the fund’s board, said the organization was created in memory of Everest, who died in a car crash on Dec. 7, 2024.

Since then, Ballance, Everest’s mother, Nicole, and other board members have worked to establish the fund and give back to young people in the community.

“It’s something that we know Everest would want to do, and he was so much a part of the community, and so we want to just pass that along to as many little bodies as we can.”

Ballance said the fund currently supports children under 17 in the local area and organizers are working to expand its reach to Castlegar.

Saturday’s tournament begins at 1 p.m., with participants asked to arrive at Balfour Golf Course around 11 a.m.

“It’s going to be a really good day of golf, and then once the rounds are all done, we will tally up the sheets, provide a meal, and have a couple beverages and have a couple laughs.”

The tournament is designed to be accessible to golfers of all skill levels, with challenges incorporated throughout the course.

“The challenges vary from hitting close things to Everest’s heart. Items in the fairway to using his small putter to get the longest putt. The big thing is about having everyone there and having everyone have a good time, whether you’re a first-timer or a pro.”

A silent auction is also being held through the Everest Legacy Fund’s Facebook page.
