Two West Kootenay residents receive Neil Muth Memorial Scholarship

Two West Kootenay residents are among three Columbia Basin students receiving this year’s Neil Muth Memorial Scholarship, which supports people who have demonstrated perseverance in the face of adversity as they pursue post-secondary education and career goals.

Jasmine Burrows of South Slocan and Stefanie Soukeroff of Castlegar were named recipients alongside Talus Josephson of Golden. The three recipients will share $10,000 in scholarship funding.

Established in 2017, the scholarship honours Neil Muth, Columbia Basin Trust president and chief executive officer from 2005 to 2016. It is awarded by the Muth family, administered by Columbia Basin Trust and funded through donations from family, friends, local governments and organizations.

“Even in the face of overwhelming challenge and hardship, these individuals have continued to believe in themselves and the potential for a better future,” said Cathy Muth, Neil Muth’s wife. “Our family is grateful to them for sharing their stories. The resolve and hope Jasmine, Talus and Stefanie show in reaching for their dreams is inspiring—we wish them the very best.”

Burrows is pursuing studies in the social services field with the goal of supporting individuals and communities facing challenges.

“Overcoming adversity has taught me perseverance, adaptability and the importance of believing in myself, even during difficult times. Receiving the Neil Muth Memorial Scholarship is incredibly meaningful because it helps remove financial barriers so I can focus on my education and future goals. This support is an investment in my potential, and it motivates me to continue working hard toward a career where I can have a positive impact on others.”

Soukeroff is pursuing advanced studies in science and health care after completing a Social Service Worker Certificate and a Human Services Diploma. She plans to continue her education with the long-term goal of becoming an emergency physician.

“I am deeply honoured to receive the Neil Muth Memorial Scholarship and grateful to the Muth family for their generosity. As a former youth in government care, I know how powerful support can be in building a better future. I have completed both a Social Service Worker Certificate and a Human Services Diploma, and I am continuing my studies in mathematics and science while pursuing Medical Laboratory Assistant training. My long-term goal is to attend medical school and become an emergency physician. This scholarship allows me to keep moving toward that goal, and I am incredibly grateful for the opportunities it creates.”

Josephson, of Golden, is pursuing a degree in chemical engineering.

Columbia Basin Trust said the scholarship recognizes Basin residents who have demonstrated resilience while working toward their educational and career goals.
