A major storm was a setback for a provincial baseball tournament at Butler Park in Trail, but organizers are pushing ahead with a condensed schedule.
The U18 BC Minor Baseball college prep provincials got underway Thursday at Butler Park, involving eight teams from around the province. After two games, the heavens opened up, cancelling the third game and threatening the entire tournament.
“[It was] like nothing we’ve ever seen,” said Trail Youth Baseball president Jim Maniago. “The field was almost entirely underwater. We had volunteers there till about 11 o’clock last night trying to do the best we could and back at 6 this morning.”

When play resumed, the field was “better than we would have expected.” One game was completed, but the second game (involving the host Trail Orioles) saw only the first inning in the books before the rain returned, forcing a delay. Organizers are hoping to resume the tournament around 4:30 or 5 p.m. today.
Eight teams are involved overall: five from the Lower Mainland, one from Vancouver Island, one from the Okanagan, plus Trail.
The winner advances to the U18 national championship in Fort McMurray.
