Castlegar’s affordable housing development officially complete

Castlegar’s new affordable housing development, Eagle Estates, is officially move-in ready, offering 13 new affordable rental units for families, seniors, and individuals.

Located at 1101 2nd Street, Eagle Estates features eight one-bedroom apartments on the upper floor for individuals with low or moderate incomes.

The ground floor features a five-bedroom, staffed living space for adults with developmental disabilities. Tenants on this floor have access to full-time, on-site support services funded by Community Living BC.

“Eagle Estates is an incredible example of what happens when community organizations, different levels of government, and local leadership work together to meet real needs,” said Castlegar Mayor Maria McFaddin in a press release.

“This development brings more than just housing to Castlegar. It brings dignity, opportunity, and a sense of belonging to the people who live here.”

The BC Government says the new building is a partnership between BC Housing, the City of Castlegar, the Columbia Basin Trust, and the Kootenay Society for Community Living (KSCL) – which also owns and operates the building.

The project has been ten years in the making. KSCL provided about $1.1 million in capital and land for the project, while the Columbia Basin Trust provided about $821,000.

The City waived fees totaling around $48,000 to support the development.
