Fruitvale by-election nomination period closes next week

The Village of Fruitvale is accepting nominations for its upcoming by-election to replace Mayor Steve Morrisette.

Morrisette, who was named the Kootenay-Monashee MLA following October’s Provincial Election, chaired his final council meeting in November.

Councillor Catherine Ellison was appointed as deputy mayor on November 13.

Nominations to replace Morrisette, and one councillor, opened on February 6.

The nomination period will close at 4 p.m. on February 28, with the by-election scheduled for April 5.

Those interested in throwing their hat into the ring can pick up a nomination package at the Village of Fruitvale office.

Completed packages must be submitted to Chief Elections Officer Patricia Denhel before 4 p.m. on February 28.

Interested individuals must also ensure they qualify to be nominated, elected, and to hold office as a member of local government by meeting the following criteria:

● Canadian citizen;
● 18 years of age or older on general voting day (April 5, 2025);
● Resident of British Columbia for at least 6 months immediately before the day nomination papers are filed;
● Not disqualified under the Local Government Act or any other enactment from being nominated for, being elected to, or holding the office, or be otherwise disqualified by law.
