Castlegar arena floor project rumors dispelled

The chair of the Castlegar recreation commission says the replacement of the arena floor at the recreation complex is “on schedule and on budget” despite any claims to the contrary.

“There’s some rumors going around that the company’s not going to be working in the summer, they’re taking it off,” Sue Heaton-Sherstobitoff told city council this week.

“But it is going on five days a week. They’re not working part-time and it will be finished by mid-October. They took the black plastic off the windows so you can see what’s going on.”

The project involves removing old concrete, some of the existing sub-grade materials and installing new subgrade materials, a new cooling floor and a heating subfloor to prevent frost.

The work, being done by Reward Construction Ltd. of Edmonton, began in mid-March to address brine leaks that have occurred over the last few years in the original floor installed in 1976.

The work has forced a temporary closure of the arena, although the rest of the rec complex is still open.
