A group of religious and indigenous leaders in Canada and the US is calling on the two nations to negotiate a modern Columbia River Treaty that focuses on moral questions not just energy and political ones.
Sara Thompson – a spokesperson for the Intertribal Fish Commission based in Portland – says the group is a broad spectrum of people and communities who were wronged by the original treaty.
Anglican,Catholic and First Nations leaders are among the signatories of a declaration calling on Prime Minister Stephen Harper and President Barack Obama to negotiate a modern treaty that advances water stewardship and respects indigenous rights.
