Wildsight calling for more protection of South Selkirk Caribou https://www.mykootenaynow.com/26229/regional-news/news/wildsight-calling-for-more-protection-of-south-selkirk-caribou/ Tue, 17 Apr 2018 21:06:25 +0000 http://www.mykootenaynow.com/?p=26229

The South Selkirk Caribou herd has dropped in numbers from eleven to three.

Wildsight BC is calling on the provincial and federal governments to take action. John Bergenske with Wildsight says the federal government is recognizing their responsibility under the Species at Risk Act.

[audio mp3="http://www.mycrestonnow.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/John-govt.mp3"][/audio]

He adds both federal and provincial governments need to take a bigger role in the issue than they have to date. South Selkirk Caribou numbers have been declining for the past several years.

Trish Drinkle, media relations with the BC Snowmobile Federation is also concerned with the low numbers of caribou. She says science based conservation is necessary and sometimes that means making difficult decisions.

Both Bergenske and Drinkle say the caribou have been vulnerable to predation and habitat loss for years. Bergenske says it's unfortunate they have to consider captive breeding.

[audio mp3="http://www.mycrestonnow.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/John-additional-animals.mp3"][/audio]

He says there has been a lot of discussion around the issue but no definite plans have been made yet. Wildsight BC has worked with the province for many years to protect the mountain caribou.

Avalanche Canada issues public avalanche warning https://www.mykootenaynow.com/24363/regional-news/news/avalanche-canada-issued-public-avalanche-warning/ Thu, 11 Jan 2018 22:30:37 +0000 http://www.mykootenaynow.com/?p=24363

Recreational backcountry users should exercise caution over the next few days.

Avalanche Canada has issued a special public warning which will remain in effect until the end of Monday.

The warning includes the West Kootenay-Boundary area.

The weight of the recent snowfall has made an unstable snowpack even worse.

Forecasting Program Supervisor James Floyer said in a release:

'These conditions require expert-level decision making skills and we recommend backcountry users avoid avalanche terrain.  The signs indicating you are exposed to avalanche terrain can be very subtle.  If you don't have the training to recognise them, please avoid the backcountry or hire a professional guide.'
