Upgrades to Grand Forks' community waste water infrastructure will help protect fish and their aquatic habitat in the Kettle River.

The City received two thirds of the $460,000 project from the provincial and federal governments.

Mayor Frank Konrad says the money will help implement an ultra-violet disinfection process that is safe, effective and in keeping with Council's desire to respect the natural environment.

Konrad admits if it weren't for the funding they probably wouldn't be able to take on a project like this.

He says the project is in line with The Grand Forks Sustainable Community Plan.

There are positive trends in the RCMP's latest crime stats update for the City of Trail.

Every category except assaults saw a reduction in the number of incidents in 2014.

Sergeant Darren Oelke says they've seen a continual drop in most crimes over recent years.

[audio mp3="http://www.mykootenaynow.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/sgt-i-think-a-lot-of-that-has-to-do-with.mp3"][/audio]

Oelke says the number of thefts, mischief and possessions of stolen property is now one third of what it was in 2010.

He also notes the detachment - that has been running short-staffed for some time - will be up to its full strength of 22 by September

Police responded to the blaze in the Hills area after midnight Sunday and the 44 year old homeowner was unaccounted for.

Investigators were back at the scene yesterday to gather more evidence.

Sergeant Darryl Little says they believe the woman may have re-entered the house to retrieve personal belongings after the fire started.

Little says the B.C. Coroners Service still has to positively identify the remains.

The house was completely destroyed by the fire and no foul play is suspected.
