UPDATED: Home lost to fire at Waneta Junction

Kootenay Boundary Regional Fire Rescue has confirmed a home has been destroyed after a fire broke out around 3:18 p.m. today in the 8400 Block of Highway 22A at Waneta Junction.

“Upon arrival the structure was heavily involved in fire and fire crews took a defensive approach to protect exposure,” Capt. Lee Depellegrin said in a news release.

Fourteen firefighters responded from Trail, Montrose, and Warfield. It took them about an hour and 20 minutes to get the blaze under control.

Smoke was highly visible from Trail and the Montrose cutoff. Images on social media showed a plume of black smoke being kicked up.

The cause of the incident is under investigation. The highway was closed for a while, but has since reopened.

There were no immediate reports of any injuries. According to BC Assessment, the home, at the corner of the highway and Knight Street, was built in 1953.
