Warfield resident loses $7k in telephone scam

A Warfield man has lost $7,000 after falling prey to a telephone fraud last Friday, February 28.

The man was contacted on his phone by a person claiming to be an ‘officer’.

The caller said the man’s son was in jail and he needed to pay the money to have his son freed on bail. The man sent $6000 via electronic money transfer and $1000 in gift card funds to the caller.

The man later realized he was the victim of a fraud and contacted police, however, the money was not recoverable.

“This is a very common theme used to defraud people over the phone. The police do not call people and collect bail money electronically over the phone and through electronic money transfers. If you receive a call like this, please hang up and contact your local RCMP detachment directly to report the incident to an officer,” says Sgt. Mike Wicentowich.
