Trail RCMP have noted a decline across most crime sections in the latest quarterly results for the detachment.
Sgt. Mike Wicentowich with the Trail RCMP pays credit to the hard work of police, the public and other initiatives in the town to prevent criminal behaviour.
“Overall our total numbers of calls for service has dropped about 200. Our calls for service usually remain fairly steady so this is interesting reflecting the police were needed a little less in the second quarter.” said Wincentowich.
“The number of criminal code offences dropped by around 60 offences and property crime has dropped and typically property crimes is one of our most prolific crimes in the area.”
“Assaults dropped by half. Assaults do tend to fluctuate but we’re happy to see that they’re down and sex assault reports were up but still within you know our statistical averages but we do believe more people are reporting sexual assaults because the RCMP has in trail has made it easier to report and get a sex assault exam at the hospital and we’re hoping that more victims come forward we capture the evidence even if they’re not ready to proceed with an investigation.”
Notable statistical changes between 2nd Quarter 2023 and 2nd Quarter 2024
- Total number of calls for service dropped to 1419 (Q2 2024) from 1699 (Q2 2023);
- Totally number of crime code offences dropped to 355 (Q2 2024) from 416 (Q2 2023);
- Total number of property crime dropped to 186 (Q2 2024) from 212 (Q2 2023);
- Assaults dropped to 19 (Q2 2024) from 45 (Q2 2023);
- Reported sexual assaults went up to 13 (Q2 2024) from 7 (Q2 2023);
- Mental health related calls dropped to 63 (Q2 2024) from 92 (Q2 2023);
