Castlegar’s pulp mill will take a month of down time as a result of the Vancouver port strike.
Mercer International, which owns Celgar, said the curtailment will last from Saturday through Aug. 28.
It said it results from a “significant loss of rail transport capacity” from job action at the Vancouver port, which has led to a complete halt to rail traffic, “severely impacting” the mill’s ability to transport pulp.
“Regrettably, we are not able to run the mill economically until rail operations resume regular services,” president and CEO said Juan Carlos Bueno said in a news release.
“We understand the inconvenience and difficulties this may cause our various partners and stakeholders, and we will strive to keep all affected parties informed of any updates as the situation develops.”
Celgar previously took several weeks of downtime this year due to a fibre shortage.
The union that represents dockworkers revoked its 72-hour strike notice shortly after it was issued and picket lines were removed.
