The City of Castlegar is urging residents to have their say on a community plan that will guide the city’s evolution over the next decade.
“Castlegar is growing, changing, and facing new challenges and opportunities that need to be reflected in the city’s long-term planning and policies,” says mayor Maria McFaddin.
“This community plan project will get people thinking about what they would like Castlegar to look like in 2033 and create the city’s playbook for growth and development over the next decade.”
The 2011 official community plan currently guides the city’s planning and land use management. As part of the project, the city is also updating its zoning bylaw and downtown design guidelines.
The city says it typically only hears from about five per cent of residents when engaging in community planning but hopes to do better than that in developing this plan.
“It’s really critical that we hear back from residents,” said planning manager Meeri Durand. “We recognize the community is changing and expectations are shifting.”
Durand said there have also been changes in provincial and federal regulations that the current plan no longer aligns with.
The city says there are few ways for residents to share their opinions to help influence and inform the plan.
