NPD exploring all possibilities on suspicious Academy fire

Nelson Police Dept is investigating all possibilities surrounding the suspicious fire at the Academy of Oriental Sciences building that could have been much worse.

Deputy Chief Paul Burkart says they will be making enquiries in the community.

He can’t say if it’s arson at this stage and figures someone lighting a fire for warmth could even be a possibility.


The Fire Dept says it was good fortune residents in neighboring properties heard the local alarm in the wee hours of Saturday morning. The building is not up to modern code and a blaze could spread very quickly if not detected early.
