Nelson council awaits independent review on their salary

Nelson city council has voted to get it’s independent community committee to sign off on any increases to councillor remuneration.

Councillor Donna MacDonald says the community group did its best to come up with recommendations on pay but was not armed with enough comparative information from other similarly sized towns.

That info has now come through.


The proposed increases for mayor and councillors are minimal.

But MacDonald says there’s a reason they have an independent committee to make such recommendations because it’s not right that council should be deciding its own salary increases.
