More rain in September than usual

Last month we saw quite a bit of rain, according to Weather Forecaster at the Southeast Fire Centre, Ron Lakeman.

“Things did change, basically the night of the seventh, first system came through and it did produce some showers. We had some following systems which produced greater amounts of rain, so there’s a couple of systems that did produce 14 millimeters, the night of thirteenth and again the night of the twenty-second.”

The mean monthly temperature was slightly cooler than normal and the total monthly rainfall was 42 per cent greater than normal. It was the first month with a greater than normal amount of precipitation since April. Another highlight from last month was a new record daily maximum temperature set on September 7 with a high of 31.4 degrees.

Although Tuesday’s storm event reeked some havoc across the area, Lakeman says it was much worse for those living in parts of the East Kootenay.

“Here locally it was more the frontal system which produced the thunders showers, but just east of here, we had snow, we had quite a bit of snow. And then they even had some lightening occurring while the temperature was such that it was snowing. So, interesting day across the board. Here locally, yeah, it was a fairly common late season frontal system that happened to produce a fairly organized band of frontal showers.”

He says they got hit with a blast of arctic air coming in from Alberta. The freezing level was about 2000 meters for most of the day which then dropped to 1,200 to 1,300 meters.
