Blackmore back to court

Accused polygamist Winston Blackmore is heading back to court but no date has been set.

A request by Special Prosecutor Peter Wilson to forego a preliminary hearing on the matter and head straight to trial has been signed off by the Attorney General.

Wilson is seeking a direct indictment against Blackmore, who allegedly has more than two dozen wives.

Under usual circumstances, a preliminary hearing is held to determine if there is enough evidence for a trial, but that can be avoided if the Attorney General agrees going directly to trial would be in the public interest.

Blackmore has opted to be tried by judge and jury.

He’ll appear in court in Cranbrook but that date has not been scheduled.
