Unique hotspot for local grizzlies

Our local conservation office says the unique location of a stretch of rail bed outside Nelson is the reason why grizzly bears show up so early each spring.

Jason Hawks is explaining the need to close the trail beyond Cottonwood Lake to Hall Siding was based on the lush, green food that’s shooting up there.

Hawks says it’s possible to see bears in that location all season but typically the grizzlies will go to higher elevation come mid June which is when the trail we re-open to the public.
