B.C. NDP to appoint new interim leader after election defeat

The B.C. NDP caucus is regrouping after a major election defeat and is expected to choose an interim leader this week.

David Eby announced Saturday that he would step down as party leader, saying he was “heartbroken” by the number of fellow New Democrat MLAs who lost their seats and accepting responsibility for the result.

Preliminary results from Elections B.C. show the NDP leading in 28 ridings, down 19 from the 47 seats it held before the election. The B.C. Conservatives are leading in 63 ridings, enough to secure a majority government.

In a statement Tuesday, the NDP caucus said the party would take a “clear and honest” look at its election campaign.

The caucus said it would determine the timing and process for a leadership race in the weeks and months ahead.
