Castlegar: 3 for mayor, 9 for council

Castlegar residents will have three candidates to choose from for mayor and eight for council.

Two of the mayoral candidates have been known for months: incumbent councillors Brian Bogle and Sue Heaton-Sherstobitoff. Incumbent mayor Maria McFaddin isn’t seeking re-election. But a surprise came Thursday when Donald Pharand of Grand Forks added his name to the race.

Pharand ran provincially for the Green Party in West Kootenay-Boundary in 2005. We’re expecting to speak to him on Monday to learn why he has put his name forward.

When the nomination deadline closed today, there were also nine candidates for council, including incumbents Darcy Bell, Sandy Bojechko, Shirley Falstead, and Cherryl MacLeod. They are joined by newcomers Chance Boruck, Heather Fancy, Miguel Godau, Gordon Malcolm, and Merrick Zemp. The top six will be elected.

General voting day is Oct. 17.
