Wait Creek wildfire evacuation update and travel advisory

Wait Creek wildfire evacuation update and travel advisory

Residents across the Kootenay region are advised that the Regional District of East Kootenay has partially downgraded evacuation orders issued because of the Wait Creek wildfire.

An evacuation alert is now in effect for a limited number of properties in the Wasa Lake, Lazy Lake, Meadowbrook and parts of the Ta Ta Creek area that are farther from the fire. The evacuation order remains in effect for properties closest to the wildfire in the Ta Ta Creek area.

Residents should check the Regional District of East Kootenay’s evacuation map to confirm whether their property remains under an evacuation order or has been downgraded to an evacuation alert. Those returning home should remain prepared to leave on short notice if conditions change.

Highway 93 has reopened to traffic, while Highway 95A remains closed.

Power outages caused by downed hydro lines have left no fuel or electric vehicle charging services available between Golden and Fort Steele. Motorists travelling through the region should ensure they have enough fuel or battery charge before departing and should check DriveBC for the latest road conditions.

Emergency Support Services will continue to assist residents who remain under an evacuation order. Meals are available for evacuees at the Cranbrook Curling Centre, and anyone who has not yet registered for Emergency Support Services is encouraged to do so in person or online.

The BC Wildfire Service continues to classify the Wait Creek wildfire as a Fire of Note and is providing regular updates. Residents are encouraged to monitor official sources, including the Regional District of East Kootenay, BC Wildfire Service and DriveBC, for the latest information.
