Evacuation alert issued for Poplar Creek wildfire

An evacuation alert has been issued for 30 properties in Electoral Area D following a recommendation from the B.C. Wildfire Service because of the Poplar Creek wildfire.

The alert issued by the Regional District of Central Kootenay covers properties from 15904 Highway 31 north through the community of Poplar Creek to Rapid Creek, about 60 kilometres north of Kaslo.

Residents and visitors are not being asked to evacuate at this time. However, the regional district is urging people in the affected area to be ready to leave on short notice if conditions deteriorate.

Officials recommend preparing an emergency kit, making arrangements for pets and livestock and planning where to stay if an evacuation order is issued. Residents are also encouraged to register for Voyent Alert emergency notifications.

According to the B.C. Wildfire Service, the Poplar Creek wildfire is estimated at 162 hectares and is believed to have been caused by lightning. Fire crews are constructing a control line on the east side of the fire before it reaches Highway 31, while aviation resources are assisting suppression efforts.

The B.C. Wildfire Service has also issued an area restriction for the Poplar Creek area. Entry into the restricted area is prohibited without prior written authorization.

The Regional District of Central Kootenay said updates to the evacuation alert will be posted on its website and social media channels as more information becomes available.

Current information on wildfire activity, evacuation alerts and emergency preparedness is available through the Regional District of Central Kootenay and the B.C. Wildfire Service.
