Trail rec fees going up 3% in September

You’ll pay three per cent more to use Trail’s recreation facilities starting in September.

City council has approved that increase, subject to adoption on Aug. 17, which is a little more than usual. The fees apply to facility rentals, admissions, memberships, and equipment rentals, but not to program registrations.

Traditionally, fees have increased at about the same rage as wage increasees for staff, which had remained at two per cent for several years. However, a staff report to council last week noted that the collective agreement ratified in 2024 included wage increases of five per cent, five per cent, and four per cent, “creating additional inflationary pressure on departmental operating costs.”

So staff proposed three per cent increases throughout the fee schedule.

“While this increase is lower than recent labour rate increases, it is intended to provide a balanced approach that helps offset rising operating costs while maintaining affordability for users and competitiveness with comparable regional rates,” municipal services manager Jared Miner wrote.

Along with the general increase come some other changes, like removing place-setting charges and the walk-in cooler-only rate for the Trail Memorial Centre kitchen, and adding a multi-day conference rate for the Victoria View room at the Memorial Centre.
