Quick action by residents helps contain Glade fire

Quick action by local residents helped prevent a Sunday morning structure fire in Glade from becoming much larger, according to Tarrys Fire Rescue.

Tarrys Fire Rescue said in a social media post that it and the Crescent Valley Fire Department were dispatched to a structure fire in the 2000 block of Glade Road at about 9:30 a.m. on July 26.

While en route, crews were told a fire in an RV trailer had spread to a barn, boat and nearby sea-can containers. The blaze had also spread into the surrounding field and trees.

Arriving crews deployed handlines from an engine, along with a forestry pump and portable water tank, to combat the grass fire.

The fire destroyed the RV trailer, barn, boat and sea-can containers. The department said firefighters remained on scene for about six hours.

Crews from the Beasley Fire Department were later called in to assist with firefighting and mop-up operations.

Tarrys Fire Rescue said the fire could have spread much more quickly and become much larger if not for the efforts of nearby residents, who used water and other equipment to slow the grass fire before crews arrived.

“Glen with his water tanker, Dan, Matt and whoever may have had a hand in preventing the grass fire from spreading before our crew arrived, us along with the community is grateful!” said Tarrys Fire Rescue.

The department also thanked members of the Glade community for providing breakfast and sandwiches to firefighters during the lengthy response, as well as the Glade ferry operator for helping emergency vehicles cross quickly.

It also thanked people at the nearby boat launch for their patience.

“Thank you to everyone at the boat launch for their patience while we refilled tenders and to the Ferry operator for his quick operation getting our apparatus across in Glade!”

In total, 22 firefighters responded with two engines, three water tenders, two rescue vehicles and two command vehicles.

The cause of the fire has not been released.
