Kootenay RCMP officers to be seconded for FIFA World Cup

Castlegar RCMP expect at least one of their members to join a policing deployment for the FIFA World Cup in Vancouver.

Sgt. Monty Taylor explained to city council this week that under provincial legislation, officers from throughout BC are being seconded to the event, which takes place June 11 to July 19. While Castlegar hasn’t been called to send anyone yet, Taylor expects that it will happen.

“It’s a great opportunity for a member to go and be involved,” he said.

Taylor said they would probably lose a member for a week or two. But restrictions would be in place on other members taking leave during that time, so it shouldn’t impact local policing operations, he added.

Although every detachment is technically on the hook to send up to 10 per cent of its members, Taylor said the math doesn’t work for detachments with only a few officers. So for the purposes of the West Kootenay-Boundary, the detachments have been grouped together.

“We’re fortunate with the smaller detachments that they kind of lumped us together and we all have to do our fair share to make it work,” he said.
