Larger open fires to be banned in Southeast Fire Centre next week

Larger open fires will be banned in the Southeast Fire Centre as of next Thursday at noon.

The agency said the prohibition on Category 3 fires is being put in place to help prevent human-caused wildfires and protect public safety. The ban will remain in place until end of October unless it’s cancelled sooner.

This prohibition does not include Category 1 campfires or Category 2 open fires.

A Category 3 open fire is a fire that burns:

• Material in three or more piles at once, each not exceeding two metres high and 3 metres wide.
• Material in one or more piles, each exceeding two high and thre metres wide.
• One or more windrows each not exceeding 200 metres long or 15 metres wide.
• Stubble or grass over an area exceeding 0.2 hectares.

In addition to Category 3 open fires, air curtain burners and carbonizers will also be prohibited.
