Tentative deal reached for Fruitvale municipal workers

The Village of Fruitvale and the union representing its municipal workers have reached a tentative agreement, preventing any job action.

CUPE says details won’t be revealed until after a ratification vote on Wednesday.

“We want to thank our community for the incredible support we’ve seen throughout this process,” said Kevin Pii, a Fruitvale worker and vice-president of CUPE 2087.

“This has been a challenging round of negotiations, but we’re focused on moving forward. Our members are proud to provide the services residents and businesses rely on every day, and we look forward to continuing that work.”

Workers voted unanimously in favour of strike action in early March after mediation failed to produce an agreement between the union and the village. CUPE served 72-hour strike notice on Monday, setting the stage for a strike to begin as early as Thursday.

The union said it was seeking compensation similar to municipal workers in neighbouring communities. The village did not comment during the dispute.
