Teck to reopen Pend Oreille Zinc Mine

Metaline Falls is very conscious of how temporary the surge in population will be following news Teck will reopen the Pend Oreille Zinc mine.

So says Mayor Tara Leininger after the facility will regain a full capacity workforce of 240 people for the first time since 2008.

Leininger says they’ve being doing a lot of work over the last six years to prepare for when Teck finally decides the reserves are done and to close the mine permanently.

Leininger says after the mine was closed in 2008 the population shrank from 320 to 240.

Operations at the mine should be underway no later than early 2015.
