Columbia Basin Trust chair resigns following arrest

The chair of the Columbia Basin Trust has stepped down after being arrested on allegations of sexual assault.

Valemount mayor Owen Torgerson confirmed his arrest in an email to Vista Radio. However, no charges have been laid.

Torgerson noted he has retained legal counsel and will continue to serve his role as mayor and director within the Regional District of Fraser-Fort George. If charged, Torgerson will be mandated to take a leave of absence under the Community Charter.

In a separate email to Vista Radio, RCMP Staff Sgt. Kris Clark said the RCMP does not confirm or deny any investigation, or identify any person, business or entity who may be subject to an investigation, until charges have been laid.

Torgerson has been on the Columbia Basin Trust board since 2019 and took over as chair in February. The Trust confirmed Torgerson’s resignation as both chair and director.
