Wildfire risk reduction planning underway in Upper Rossland

The City of Rossland is beginning planning for a wildfire risk reduction project in the Iron Horse Parkland area, with funding support from the Columbia Basin Trust’s Columbia Basin Wildfire Resiliency Initiative.

The project area is on the lower slopes of Monte Christo Mountain/KC Ridge, near homes, popular recreation trails and critical municipal water infrastructure. The city said the work builds on past wildfire mitigation efforts and will help reduce wildfire risk, improve forest health and better protect homes, infrastructure and public recreation areas.

Site assessments and plan development are scheduled to begin in spring 2026. No impacts to public access are expected during this phase.

Operational work is anticipated to begin in fall and winter 2026.

Planned treatments include reducing surface fuel loads, selective thinning, pruning and other actions to improve forest resiliency.

More details on timing, locations and activities will be shared as planning progresses.
