Construction hasn’t begun yet on the new daycare in Trail’s Tadanac neighbourhood, but the city is still hoping it will be completed next year.
A groundbreaking ceremony was held last October for the Unicorn Childcare Centre.
City communications manager Claire Samulak said Boni Maddison Architects continues to work on detailed design and costing for the building with hopes of issuing a request for proposals for construction by mid-June.
Last year the city said it hoped construction would be finished by spring 2027. Samulak said the goal is now summer.
The project was announced in 2021 and a few months later, Teck announced it would provide land at the north end of Kootenay Avenue. The facility was originally supposed to open in 2022.
However, the project had a hard time finding a non-profit operator, which was a requirement to receive provincial funding, and construction costs rose.
Kootenay Family Place has since stepped forward as the operator and the original 65 spaces have been scaled back to 44, including 12 infant/todder spots.
