UPDATED: Residents displaced in Salmo fire

A fire Wednesday in a multi-unit housing complex in Salmo has displaced several people.

Leta Mcconnell, who took the photos seen here, said the fire started at 5:30 a.m. and burned two units in the six-unit Creekside apartments. Everyone got out safely, she said, and the tenants are now in hotels as water and power has been cut off to the complex.

In a Facebook post, Mcconnell said some tenants had insurance but others didn’t. She said they have been placed in hotels until Saturday, but will have to find other accommodation after that. She is appealing to others to give them a place to stay.

“I am calling out to the community for the help for our Salmo friends,” she said. “Doesn’t need to be anything fancy, just a roof over their heads and a warm bed. An empty basement unit, a camping trailer, space room, anything until they can get back home.”

Mcconnell says anyone willing to donate money to help extend their hotel stays or help with food costs can reach out to her. She’s also planning to place donation jars around town.

We’ve left messages for the Salmo Fire Department and RCMP.
