Compost sales coming to RDKB

Kootenay Boundary residents will soon be able to buy Class A compost at local landfill and transfer sites.

The Regional District of Kootenay Boundary board of directors approved a model for the sale of compost at its Sept. 17 meeting.

Beginning in October, residents can purchase Class A compost at McKelvey Creek Landfill, Grand Forks Landfill and Rock Creek Transfer Station at a cost of $10 per cubic metre, with a minimum charge of $5.

There will be a maximum of 2 cubic metres per load.

Anyone wishing to take compost material will be required to self-load – no equipment will be available on site for use.

A handout will be provided to each customer who purchases compost that meets the Fertilizers Act (Canada) and Regulations labelling requirements.

The Regional District of Central Kootenay launched a similar program in August.

The RDKB’s rates are slightly lower than the RDCK’s, where customers are charged $20 per cubic metre at the Ootischenia Landfill, with a maximum load of 1.5 cubic metres per day.
