Wildfire west of Castlegar now being held

The BC Wildfire Service says a fire burning west of Castlegar is now “being held.” That means it’s expected to remain with its current perimeter or control line.

The fire on the north side of Mount Mackie has burned 182.5 hectares. It’s the largest wildfire burning in the West Kootenay, but it poses no threat to homes or to Highway 3.

It was discovered on Aug. 3 and is believed to have been started by lightning.

According to the latest update from BC Wildfire, small-scale hand ignitions were completed to bring the fire to control lines on the east.

Crews continue to work along the south side, establishing a fuel free break that will be tied into the control line. Crews are also working on direct attack and more hand ignitions are planned if conditions allow.

Helicopter pads are also being established to support crew and equipment movement and heavy equipment and water tenders continue working on establishing guard.
