Pioneer Arena site prep to begin next week

The demolition of Castlegar’s Pioneer Arena is on track to begin in August.

The city said in a statement that crews are set to install fencing and prepare the site during the week of Aug. 5–8. Abatement inside the building will begin the following week to remove any hazardous materials.

Demolition will occur shortly afterward and is expected to take about two months.

The arena, located at 925 Columbia Ave., was deemed at the end of its life in October 2023.

In May 2024, the city announced plans to develop a housing and health project on the site, but so far has only secured approval and funding for the housing component.

The housing project is a partnership between the city, B.C. Housing and Lu’ma Developments, and will add up to 78 non-market housing units to the community.

“The city’s strategic plan commits us to creating a future with affordable homes for all,” said Mayor Maria McFaddin.

“This project reflects that commitment and our willingness to step outside our traditional role to help make housing happen. It’s a significant step toward ensuring residents of all ages and income levels can continue to call Castlegar home.”
