Trail RCMP say no charges are being contemplated after Thursday’s discovery of an air rifle at J-L Crowe Secondary School in Trail.
Police say a 17-year-old from Fruitvale told investigating officers that they had forgotten it was inside the truck parked at the school and apologized for the trouble caused.
The report of a firearm in a vehicle prompted a call to RCMP after school officials were unable to find the weapon.
School District 20 Superintendent Katherine Shearer said officers found the rifle shortly after arriving at the scene.
In the meantime, the school was on lock down.
A student told Vista News that the words “Lock down, Lock down, Lock down” rung out over the school’s public address system at about 1:30 p.m.
She said there was confusion as some students were unsure about what to do and where to go and she took refuge in an upstairs workout room.
The all-clear signal came about 10 minutes later.
RCMP say their investigation continues.
“We suspect that the air rifle may have ended up at an unsanctioned graduation event reportedly taking place in the Pend O’Reille area,” said Detachment Commander Mike Wicetowich, who stated police are not taking anything for granted.
“Officers will be monitoring this planned event and conduct patrols along the road leading to the alleged location,” the Staff Sgt added.

The Superintendent of School District 20 says a report of a gun in a vehicle in the student parking lot prompted this afternoon’s lock down at J-L Crowe Secondary School in Trail.
Katherine Shearer says the gun had been moved by the time staff went to look for it and the RCMP were called.
She says the lock down was lifted about ten minutes later when police found the pellet gun in the parking lot.
It has been seized by the RCMP.
